WBA Super Flyweight champion Kohei Kono (30-8-1, 13) set off to the US last week for a short training camp in the country ahead of his upcoming world title defense against the controversial Koki Kameda (33-1, 18). As part of that training camp Kono spent time at the Wildcard gym, a gym run by Hall of Famer trainer Freddie Roach, the trainer of Filipino great Manny Pacquiao.
Unfortunately we're not sure how much time Kono spent with Roach though it does appear that he's made some very useful contacts with the trainer and was also snapped with WBC Middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, one of Roach's main fighters.
Whilst specific details of Kono's training in the US have been scarce it does appear that he's been getting used to the US conditions and time zone as well as the big fight experience, with the "Tough Boy" attending the recent Gennady Golovkin Vs Willie Monroe Jr fight.
We're still awaiting the official announcement of the Kono Vs Kameda bout though all signs are suggesting that an announcement is imminent and could be made by the end of the week. What we do know is that it will be fought in the US and that the Japanese media have strongly suggested it will be in July.
