Yesterday Japanese fans saw the exciting Kohei Kono (32-8-1, 13) [河野 公平] successfully retain his WBA Super Flyweight title with a very wide decision win over a game but thoroughly out matched Inthanon Sithchamuang (28-8-1, 15)* [อินทนนท์ ศิษย์ชะมวง].
Today Kono was part of post fight press conference and he, and the team that manages his career, spoke about the future.
The hope now for Kono is to try and squeeze in two fights this year. The first of those will, hopefully, be held in Summer, though no details have been made clear in regards to that bout. The second however is FOTY candidate on paper with Kono's team hoping to secure a New Year's Eve bout between the "Tough Boy" and Panamanian slugger Luis Concepcion (34-4, 24). That bout could potentially be a mandatory for Kono and it seems likely that Watanabe will be wanting to hold it in front of a larger audience than their roughly planned Summer show, with the end of year shows being big business in Japan.
Whilst those plans are still in the formative stages it seems like Kono's next move is to spend time with his wife, after the two married last year.
*Note Inthanon's record also reported as being (43-12-1, 22)
