Taguchi's opponent was named as Venezuelan Juan Jose Landaeta (27-8-1, 21), more about that in a related link below, whilst Kono's was named as Thailand's Inthanon Sithchamuang (28-7-1, 15) [อินทนนท์ ศิษย์ชะมวง].
Kono, who last defended his belt in the US against Koki Kono, had been linked to some really good fights however this one is less than great.
Inthanon is currently on a 9 fight unbeaten run though was stopped in his last 2 bouts outside of Thailand, with Jerwin Ancajas stopping him in Macau and Mark Anthony Geraldo stopping him in the Philippines. In fact Inthanon is 0-5 outside of his homeland with all 5 losses coming by stoppage, with Riocky Fuentes, Masayoshi Segawa and Yasutaka Kuroki all stopping him in their homelands.
Given the depth at Super Flyweight, and the fact Kono has been linked to the likes of Kal Yafai,Luis Concepcion this bout will certainly be one that disappoints fans, and may well result in some fighters finding themselves sitting on the outside, with Kono likely to have a mandatory later in the year.
Despite the disappointing match up, the bout does now give us closure on the 3 world title bouts set to take place on April 27th at the Ota City Gymnasium, with the main event being a WBA Super Featherweight "unification" between "Super" champion Takashi Uchiyama's (24-0-1, 20) [内山 高志] and "interim" champion Jezreel Corrales (19-1-0-1, 7).
