Kohei Kono set for US training camp, further speculation that bout with Koki Kameda is destined for the US!
This past weekend boxing fans had the chance to see a WBA Bantamweight title fight between Tomoki Kameda and Jamie McDonnell. The fight, in the US, was an absolute nail biter and one of the best bouts of the year so far. It seems we're not far off getting another bout involving a Kameda with Koki Kameda's (33-1, 18) bout against WBA Super Flyweight champion Kohei Kono (30-8-1, 13) taking a big step forward this week.
Whilst there is no date set for the bout, yet, it does seem almost certain that the bout is going to the states, where Kameda's power back Al Haymon is based.
With that in mind Kono has announced that he will be taking part in a small US training camp, beginning on May 14th. The camp will be in Los Angeles and will see Kono staying in the US until May 20th with the intention of adapting to jetleg and the conditions of the US. From what we understand the champion will also be attending the Middleweight title fight between Gennady Golovkin and Willie Monroe Jr, which takes place on May 16th.
As an aside, Kono has also indicated that he is nearly in fighting shape, with a recent blog entry stating he was state he was just over 120lbs, only just over the 115lb divisional limit.
