Last week we reported that exciting Japanese power-puncher Keita Obara (12-1, 11) would be returning to the ring on the December 8th Dangan show in a non-title bout in the Welterweight division. At the time there was no opponent announced for the reigning OPBF Light Welterweight champion who has spoken about wanting a fighter with fellow OPBF champion Yoshihiro Kamegai.
Earlier today Obara's opponent was named as 21 year old Filipino fighter Rodel Wenceslao (8-9-1, 2) who appears to have been selected as a willing victim as Obara dips his toes lightly in to the Welterweight division.
Wenceslao has fought as low as Featherweight and is currently in less than stellar form having lost 3 of his last 4 bouts, including a 5th round TKO to Rey Labao in a GAB Lightweight title bout. Notably however he did give a stirring performance against world ranked Light Welterweight Patomsuk Pathompothong last time out and it seems likely he was selected following his performance in that bout.
As huge Obara fans we see this as a hugely disappointing announcement though hopefully the bout will serve as little more than a stay busy fight for the exciting power puncher from the Misako gym and hopefully it's a blip on the road before we get the Kamegai fight in 2015.
