Today it was announced that we may be on the verge of one such bout with the WBA stating that WBA Flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka (19-1, 11) [井岡一翔] would have to face WBA "Super" champion, and current WBO champion, Juan Francisco Estrada (33-2, 24).
The two men will officially be given 30 days to negotiate a bout beginning on July 21st, the day after Ioka's scheduled defense against Nicaraguan Keyvin Lara (18-1-1, 6). If Ioka is upset by Lara then Lara will himself be ordered to face Estrada, and will be given the 30 time negotiation period beginning July 21st.
It's thought that if the WBA do go through the order then Ioka's team will be trying to lure Estrada over for a New Year's Eve bout in Osaka whilst Estrada's team will likely be looking to stage the bout in Mexico.
For Estrada the bout could potentially be his 5th defense of the title, a title that he won back in 2013 when he beate Brian Viloria. It could also be his firsy bout back following a a long abscence from the ring. Interestingly Estrada himself may vacate the WBA title to focus on his WBO title, which has been the target for Donnie Nietes who is said to have been in talks with Estrada for a bout.
For Ioka the bout would be his 4th defense of the title, and by far his toughest on paper. If however Estrada does vacate their are other options waiting in the wings with both Daigo Higa and Takuya Kogawa indicating they wanted to fight Ioka at the end of the year.
A bout between Ioka and Estrada would be huge and is the type of fight we all want to see, however if the men do end up going their separate ways it seems we could end up with some equally interesting match ups. Either way the Flyweight division looks likely to have something big before the year is over.
