The past day or two has been an interesting time in the life of Filipino fighter John Riel Casimero (20-2, 12). Yesterday morning he was the IBF Light Flyweight champion putting the finishing touches to his preparation for the 4th defence of his world title. This morning however he was a man with out a title having been stripped for being more than 5lbs over the Light Flyweight limit.
The weight problem and drama regarding the IBF title could have played on his head. but Casimero didn't show it as he went in to the ring, got the job done and stopped Colombian Mauricio Fuentes (16-3, 10) inside a round. In fact Fuentes, who never looked fit to be a world title challenger, was yo-yoed off the canvas being dropped 3 times before being stopped at the 2:59 mark of the openign stanza.
Following the fight it was strongly hinted that Casimero would be moving to Flyweight for his next fight. With that in mind he will likely be keeping an eye on the upcoming IBF Flyweight title fight between Amnat Ruenroeng and Kazuto Ioka as that bout could decide his next opponent.
For those wanting to watch the bout, it will be televised on Filipino Channel 5 on Sunday.
