Today we're happy to report that the bout has been formally announced and will take place on June 13th in Haskins's home town of Bristol. Better yet for British fans the fight will be shown on free to air TV courtesy of channel 5.
The bout will see the two men trading blows for the interim title with a shot for the regular title being expected by the end of the year, unless Caballero vacates the belt at which point the winner will have the interim belt upgraded to the full title.
This will be the first world title bout for both men though both have had experience against world class opponents. Iwasa's sole loss has come to the exceptional Shinsuke Yamanaka whilst he holds wins over the recently deposed former Japanese champion Kentaro Masuda and former world title challenger David De La Mora. On the other hand Haskins holds wins over Jamie McDonnell and Stuart Hall, both of whom went on to win world titles.
On paper Iwasa has the edge in power and durability however Haskins is a tricky fighter and will be roared on by fans at the Whitchurch Sports Centre in his home town whilst Iwasa will be fighting outside of Tokyo for the first time in his career.
Although Haskins' team had expected to be the ones travelling it seems like Iwasa knew he'd be on the road with his gym chairman, former WBA Super Flyweight world champion, Celes Kobayashi anticipating a fight outside of Japan just days after the men were ordered to fight. Incidentally if Iwasa was to win he'd become the first Japanese fighter to win a "world title" in Europe.
