Earlier today Japanese fans saw the promising Hironobu Matsunaga (10-1, 5) [松永 宏信] score his most notable win to date, as he scored a 5th round KO win against former Japanese Middleweight champion Sanosuke Sasaki (11-5, 5) [佐々木 左之介].
Saksaki looked to fight the bout smartly and fought the opening stages with his jab as the key. That jab however became predictable and in round 2 Matsunaga began to let his hands go more freely, with his shots leaving a mark on Sasaki who looked, by the end of round 4, like a man living on borrowed time, following a knockdown and a point deduction for holding.
With Sasaki looking all in Matsunaga came out for round 5 hot, and quickly forced the referee to save the former champion, who suffered a 4th successive loss.
For Matsunaga this bout is his highest profile win to date, and could well help him move towards to bigger fight later in the year.
