On Friday fight fans in Osaka will get the chance to see the popular Hozumi Hasegawa (35-5, 15) [長谷川 穂積] take on WBC Super Bantamweight champion Hugo Ruiz (36-3, 32), who is looking for his first defence of the title.
Today, Wednesday, the two men took part in their signing ceremony, showed their mutual respect and chose their gloves for the gloves for the fight.
Ruiz, as most Mexican fights do, selected Cleto Reyes gloves. The brand is a well established on in Mexican and is typically worn by Mexican punchers. Interestingly Hasegawa has also selected the Cleto Reyes gloves, viewed as puncher's gloves.
The decision from Hasegawa shows a change in mindset in regards to the gloves, which he seemed to feel were like "concrete" when he got hit by them, back when he fought Fernando Montiel back in 2010. As well as choosing Reyes gloves Hasegawa has stated that his team have got the same wraps Floyd Mayweather Jr used and will be hoping they offer his hands the protection he feels he needs.
For fans interested in the officiating of the bout the referee will be Hector Afu, the judges will be Bert Clemens, Nicholas Hidalgo and David Sutherland whilst the supervisor will be Duane Ford. Interestingly not one of the officials is from the homeland of either fighter, something we're seeing regularly for Japanese shows and something we'd like to see used internationally.
Hasegawa looks for one final big win against big punching Ruiz!
