Yesterday saw WBC "interim" and WBA "Super" Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28) and up coming challenger Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12) complete their 30 day check weight for their upcoming bout on February 21st. The 30 day check weight limit is the divisional limit + 10%, in this case 176lbs and thankfully both men made the weight comfortably.
Surprisingly Golovkin was the heavier man weighing in at 172lbs, 4lbs inside the check weight. Murray on the other hand was 169lbs, only 9lbs ahead of the divisional limit.
Although both men made the weight they did make it in very different surroundings. Golovkin made weight at his Big Bear training camp in California where he is training with long term trainer Abel Sanchez. As for Murray he was in Johannesburg, South Africa where he is training.
For Golovkin this will be his third bout in Monaco where he has beaten both Nobuhiro Ishida and Osamu Adama, both inside the distance. For the champion these bouts have become an annual thing with one bout taking there in each of the last 2 years. As for Murray this will be his third successive bout in the principality. Like Golovkin Murray is unbeaten in Monaco though both of his wins have come via the cards.
