A few days ago we reported that WBO Light Flyweight champion Donnie Nietes (33-1-4, 19) had been given a short list of 2 possible opponents for his upcoming world title defense on November 15th. Since that report it has been announced that Nietes has made a decision and settled on 24 year old Culiacan native Carlos Velarde (26-3-1, 14), a former WBA Minimumweight title challenger.
For Velarde this will be his second world title fight after losing in that aforementioned WBA title shot, a fight that was ended in spectacular fashion by Japan's Ryo Miyazaki, whilst Nietes this will be the champions 5th defense of the title and his 10th world title fight in total.
The other option that Nietes had been offered was a fight with 23 year old Saul Juarez (20-3, 11) who was also a somewhat lack luster challenger for a fighter like Nietes, especially given how good "Ahas" had looked last time out, stopping Moises Fuentes in a genuinely sensational performance.
At the moment the card is still being put together though some very attractive match ups are expected for this card. This will be the main event whilst the chief support bout will be between the very exciting Albert Pagara (21-0, 15) and Mexico's tough Raul Hirales (22-3-1, 11). As well as the two bouts which have been announced others expected on the card are former world champion Merlito Sabillo (23-1-1, 12), AJ Banal (31-2-1, 22) and Milan Melindo (31-2-1, 12). For Sabillo his bout will be the first since he lost his world title to Mexico's fantastic Francisco Rodriguez Jr back in March.
