Filipino fighter Edrin Dapudong (29-5, 17) looks set to begin his 2014 with a very dangerous and highly interesting bout with Panamanian puncher Ricardo Nunez (26-4, 22).
Dapudong, the current IBO Super Flyweight champion is looking to re-establish himself on the world stage. The Filipino 27 year old, who is surprisingly not ranked by any of the big 4, has won 5 of his last 6 bouts since losing a world title bout to Hernan Marquez, the then WBA Flyweight champion. The one loss in recent fights for Dapudong has come against Gideon Buthelezi, a loss that has since been avenged courtesy of an opening round blow out.
Whilst Dapuong has had just 1 major world title Nunez has actually had two. The first came in 2012 to South African Moruti Mthalane in a bout that saw Nunez stopped in in 8 round, the second came just a few short months ago with Nunez dropping a technical decision to Juan Carlos Reveco in what a clear loss for Nunez.
Despite those losses, and a 5th round stoppage loss to Drian Francisco, Nunez is an incredibly dangerous fighter with a number of major wins. Amongst those that Nunez has beaten are Liborio Solis, Oscar Blanquet and Carlos Tamara.
The bout, Dapudong's first since he blew out Buthelezi last June, should be a an absolute thriller with neither man being safe from the other mans power. Great match up and one we can't wait to see. Best of all, this has been scheduled for February 15th and will take place in the Philippines, a country where Nunez is 0-1 whilst Dapudong is unbeaten since a split decision loss to Rommel Bongon back in November 2005.
