The Japanese fighter claimed the OPBF title at 168lbs back in April 2016, when he took a technical decision over Yuzo Kiyota in what was their third meeting. Prior to the win over Kiyota there was little of note on Matsumoto's record, and that win had come after a coiuple of stoppage losses to Kiyota, essentially saying more about how shot Kiyota was than how good Matsumoto had become. He would lose the belt 6 month ater winning it, as Jayde Mitchell took it from him, with a 10th round technical decision. Since the Matsumoto has gone 1-1 and moved from the now closed Yonekura Gym to the Watanabe gym as he looks for one final hoorah in his career.
The hard hitting Lai claimed the OPBF title in February 2017, when he stopped Kerry Foley for the belt, and he made his first defense this past March, stopping Thai challenger Yodkhunsuk Mor Poowana in 6 rounds. His most notable bout was a technical decision loss in China to Peng Qu, though he has since gone 3-0 since that bout. Interestingly Lai has also been beaten By Jayde Mitchell, losing to his compatriat in 2015 during a 3 fight losing run.
This bout will take place Sydney, and will be Matsumoto's third bout outside of Japan, sadly for him he is 0-2 on the road.
