Possibly the most interesting, on paper, bout in Japan today saw former OPBF Super Flyweight champion Ryo Akaho (24-1-2, 16) take a clear but unexciting decision victory over former Japanese Super Bantamweight champion Masaaki Serie (25-7, 10).
From what we've been told Serie, using his reach, seemed able to control the tempo of the fight keeping things slow but the better shots when the action did pick up all seemed to come from the stronger Akaho who made the most of his edge in power.
Serie managed to frustrate Akaho early on with his reach and movement and by the middle rounds Akaho was making mistakes due to his frustration. As the more frustrated he became the sloppier the action and the harder it was to watch with neither man managing to land much of note though it always seemed the bigger and better shots were from Akaho.
At the end of the bout all 3 cards favoured Akaho, with scored of 97-93, 97-93 and 97-94 though neither man would really have enjoyed this one.
With the win Akaho will likely move a step towards another title fight of some type, but he is still several steps away from getting that show.
